Match report | Gabbiadini's two weeks of Gardening Leave clearly did him the world of good as he inspired his charges to their best win of the season. They tore Heworth apart with Joe orchestrating affairs from the centre of midfield, spraying passes at will through the gaps in the Heworth defence. Mikey was on fire too, covering acres of ground and when Joe didn't provide the assist for a goal, Mikey did. Alex was the main beneficiary of Joe and Mikey's accurate distribution as he grabbed eight goals in his best performance of the season. Alex headed goal from one of Mikey's crosses was excellent but it was with his right foot that he destroyed his old team Heworth. He really has benefitted from Ricardo's coaching - his chance-goal conversion rate is infinitely better than earlier in the season as he now opens his body up when he's in the left channel and passes the ball sweetly into the far corner. Joe's accomplice in midfield was the indefatigable Beddo, who harried and carried and was rewarded with a goal in the second half. As well as an own goal, Joe notched from a corner, Tom nicked one when the keeper couldn't hold a Tomsett free-kick, Mikey swung over a low cross which evaded everyone and nestled in the far corner of the net and Josh Moran finished with genuine deftness near the end. Whilst the scoreline might suggest Will and the defence had little to do, that couldn't be further from the truth. We actually went one down, and at times we were tested at the back. Will made two fine saves when it looked like Heworth would score and the Richmond-Sculpher-Davies-Turton back four held firm against a tireless Heworth team. With Josh Ford on top form, his brother Dan having an excellent spell up front in the second half, Gianni showing even more of the skills he's learnt from his Uncle and Josh Quarmby adding some steel in the second half, it really was a comprehensively good performance. Time to take a sober look at next week, when we are away to unbeaten Pickering Town. Gabbiadini needs to think hard about his selection strategy after questions were asked in the wake of the Rufforth defeat. He may have scored in the onion bag at the Streford End, but that's history - it's next Sunday that matters! |
