Match report | Fulford made their first visit to the City of Hull to play in the tournament at Hessle Sporting FC. Hull is well known as a hotbed of Rugby League, but Hessle certainly appears to be a hotbed of junior football, with the hosts fielding four 11-a-side teams at U11s and their near neighbours, Hessle Rangers, fielding two. The two clubs dominated the Hull U11s league, this season, occupying the top 3 places between them. The tournament had 24 teams, with 4 groups of 6, with the top 2 going through to the ¼ finals and 3rd and 4th going into the plate competition. Fulford’s first match was against Hessle Sporting Jaguar Blacks. Fulford flew out of the blocks as Will scored 3 in 5 minutes, with his hat-trick goal coming from a header from a corner. Just before half-time Will then picked out a late-run from deep by Isaac who tapped in to score to make it 4-0 by half-time. In the second half a shot from Tom H was blocked by the keeper, but it fell to Joe C who smashed it into the net to give Fulford a 5-0 win. The next game was v Hessle Sporting Hurricanes Yellows. This game was a much tougher test and the Yellows took the lead just after half time, with a hard low shot that hit the far post and went in. The Yellows could have added to their lead but Fulford were kept in the game by two brave diving saves from Harry. Fulford pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but in a game of few clear cut chances, they were perhaps fortunate to be awarded a penalty for hand ball with 2 minutes remaining. Isaac stepped up and slotted in the penalty to give Fulford a 1-1 draw. The 3rd game was versus Hessle Sporting Hurricanes Blacks. If the Yellows were the quick tricky lads of the team, then the Blacks were the Big Lads. This game was a close encounter and Fulford came away with a 0-0 draw, thanks to two great last-ditch slide tackles from Joe I which if he’d not timed correctly would have resulted in penalty kicks. The 4th game was against Hessle Sporting Pumas Whites. Tom H was in fine form and scored the first goal. His second was possibly the goal of the day from a Fulford perspective. He hit an absolute screamer into the top left hand corner from outside the right hand edge of the box, he then went on to complete his hat-trick shortly after. Isaac added a goal in the second half and Joe C completed the scoring with a header to give Fulford a 5-0 win. Going into the final group game, Fulford knew that a win or a draw, would give us second place in the group, but couldn’t catch HSC Yellows as they had a similar W//D/L record but an extra point was awarded for scoring draws, rather than goalless draws. The final game was versus South Elmsall from Wakefield. Fulford put in a fine performance against a team with some skilful midfielders and pacy forwards. Will opened the scoring in the first half. In the second half Joe I and Tom H added further goals, before Tom B scored with an excellent long range strike to complete a 4-0 win. Second place in the group sent Fulford into the tougher half of the draw and faced a ¼ Final game versus Hessle Sporting Jaguar Allstars. Fulford made a slow start to the game and were made to pay when the ball was given away in midfield. The Allstars broke quickly and the ball was worked well to the back post, where the ball was tapped in from close range. Fulford gradually got into the game, but there was little in the way of clear cut chances. In the second half Fulford attacked down the left and the ball was played to Isaac, he cut inside and beat one opponent. As the defence pushed out to close him down, he hit a fierce right foot shot which bounced back off the left hand post and Will narrowly missed collecting the rebound. As Fulford pushed forward the Allstars were dangerous on the break and Harry made some fine saves to keep Fulford in the game. The Allstars nearly wrapped up the game 3 minutes from time, when a fantastic long range shot hit the underside of the bar, bounced down and span back into play. From the touchline it all looked very Lampard-esque, but the ref waved play on. In the remaining minutes Fulford continued to pressurise the Allstars defence but they deservedly held on, so the 0-1 defeat sent Fulford out of the competition. Many thanks to all at Hessle Sporting for organising a superb tournament, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all the Fulford players. |
