Match report | Fulford B opened the tournament against Pollington Blues. Fulford played some good football and thoroughly deserved their 1-0 win thanks to a convincing finish from Will. The 2nd group game was versus Askern B. The game followed a similar pattern to the first game, but this time with strikes from Will, including his 50th goal of the season, sealed a 2-0 victory. The third game was against the hosts, Goole Town Tigers. Fulford went 1-0 down, but the game was very much in the balance. Goole broke away and added a second, which was highly questionable as to whether it had reached the line, let alone crossed it. Goole went on to add to their lead to consign Fulford to a 0-4 defeat. The 4th game was against a strong Hessle Rangers B side who won 3-0. In the 5th game versus Howden Blues, Fulford won 1-0 thanks to a close range strike from Reza. In the final group game Fulford played out a 0-0 draw with Park Tigers B, which meant they finished 3rd in the group and qualified for the ¼ finals. In the ¼ final they faced Hessle Rangers A. Hessle kicked off and after about 6 passes went 1-0 up, before Fulford had even touched the ball. Fulford settled into the game with Harry keeping a tight reign on their ever-dangerous centre-forward. After 3 minutes, Fulford could have expected to have been facing 5 players, but still levelled the scores when a long range strike from Tom G was deflected past the diving keeper. Fulford were really fired up at this stage and swept forward in search of a 2nd goal. This goal came following a move that involved the whole team which saw Will cross to the back post for Reza to tap in. Fulford had 4 minutes to hang on for a memorable victory and looked like they would do as Hessle struggled to break down a Fulford team who battled for every ball. However an equaliser came in the last minute, as the Hessle centre-forward showed some class, to hang in the air and steer a neat header into the far corner. This meant a period of 3 minutes of extra time, which was plenty of time for further drama. The key incident was a very brave save at the feet of the Hessle centre-forward by Tom H, although in making the save it meant he badly bruised his fingers and had to swap positions with Harry. No further goals meant penalty kicks. The highlight of penalties was a fantastic reflex save on to the bar by Harry, who then stepped up to score the next penalty, but Hessle won the epic contest by scoring their 5th penalty. The Fulford players were a credit to themselves and the Club at the end, as despite all that had gone on previously, they were very dignified and sporting in defeat and wished their Hessle counterparts all the best for the rest of the competition. It was a great performance by Fulford throughout the tournament, with Harry & Tom H sharing the goalkeeping and defensive duties, Will, Tom G and James working their socks off in midfield and Reza being a constant threat up front. The whole team were awarded the man of the match for their great team display. |
