Match report   Dringhouses (was Rufforth last year) gave us 3 tough games last season and we knew a tough game was on the cards, starting well was vital.

We played a different starting defence in Doug’s absence with Ethan and Simeon starting either side of Alfie. A strong midfield of Ollie, George, Louis and Andy started with Damian the ‘fox in the box’ alone up front.

It was a very tenacious game with the two teams knew each other well from CFD and last years momentous battles but the Lions were by far the stronger team in the opening 15 minutes, first to every ball and allowed Dringhouses no time to ‘play’. We learnt from the previous game and fired more shots at the Dringhouses g/k. To be fair he was a very good g/k and saved everything. We were rewarded for our start with Damian controlling an Andy cross and firing it home. The Lions grew confidence from this goal and began playing with guile and flair. Ollie and George ran the midfield providing many attacking chances for the Lions. We could not build on this and went in at half time 1-0 up looking by far the stronger team.

A few changes were made, Ellis came on on the right to give Andy’s (who ran up and down the wing all first half) tired legs a rest. (Dringhouses knew from last year of his pace and their coach mentioned to Andy that they were keeping an eye on his pace!)

Ellis seems to have become fitter this year and chased every cause using his body strength very well. The Lions continued to press and were very unlucky when Damian hit the post and the rebound evaded our onrushing players. The Lions were not to be denied when Ollie and Louis exchanged passes very well allowing Damian to put the resulting cross against the underside of the crossbar; we were unlucky with rebounds last year and have been practising them this year BUT Ellis watched the ball and put his head against an incoming boot in a race for the ball. Ellis came out on top and planted a fine header in the top corner. 2-0 to the Lions and were in total control.

As expected the lad’s legs were tired now with some real hard running by all the team who ran their legs into the ground for the cause depicting a real ‘team’ effort. Dringhouses began to push the team which forced several small chances but Jake, although rarely tested, oozes confidence from his defenders and mopped up any loose chances. He commanded his box and is becoming a vital cog in this Lion’s machine. When it looked like Dringhouses would test Jake, out of nowhere Simeon made a ‘fantastic’ tackle (that will take some beating) whipping the ball from Dringhouses strikers feet. George and Damian were unlucky with pot shots near the end before the full time whistle was sounded. Andy (coach) thought there were still five minutes left and made what will be the shortest substitution ever swapping Ollie and Louis for all of 20 seconds.. A better stopwatch is needed!

The game ended 2-0. The Lions were brilliant today and were unlucky not to win 3 or 4 to nil. The defence (Eth, Sim and Alfie) were dominant in front of Jake, resulting in a clean sheet. The midfield is one of the strongest this league can demonstrate and is embarrassed by the talent that the coaches have at their disposal. Each individual midfielder has his own qualities; blend them together and you have the best midfield in this league. Damian as always will take that half chance; as he did today. He has scored in every game this season and long may it continue.

Today’s performance against last years champions was fantastic and rewarded the boys with a deserved win. There were several strong performances today all over the park but Simeon took the vote from both the coaches and the referee for his colossal tackling. The referee pointed out that the Fulford team look very good indeed.

Next week is Brayton (a) which will again test the boys qualities. Taking 4 points off last years joint champions shows just how much the team have developed. Well done to all.
