Match report   Today’s game was against York Cubs who beat us 3-2 last year at the Knavesmire.

Andy (as part of his team talk) pressed the need not to concede an early goal which makes life difficult and providing we started as we finished v Strensall we would be okay.

Andy’s words came to haunt him and a catalogue of midfield/defensive errors allowed York Cubs to score the game’s first goal, the pattern in the build up to the goal will never be copied it was that freakish. We were 1-0 down, heads dropped and Pete’s and Andy’s vocal cords were tested in an attempt for the boys to pick themselves up. The Cubs were first to every ball and made our team look very poor; they simply wanted the game more.

Andy reshuffled the team and brought Ethan in to his normal centre back position allowing other players to be restored to their favourite position and we started to play a bit but struggled to break down a resolute Cubs defence. Some good play on the wing by Ollie allowed him to pass to Louis who teed up his shot and nestled the ball in the corner of the goal to equalise. 1-1 and you could see the team breath a little easier. Damian was unlucky with a penalty that hit the post but continued his great work rate but was finding the goal keeper in good form.

At half time Andy gave a team talk informing the boys that they must increase the work rate and begin to pass and move as has been practised in training.

Dougie headed the ball in from an un-defendable Ethan corner to put the Lions 2-1 up shortly after the restart. You could see the relief on the players minds as they began to cut the Cubs defence open with ease. Damian scored a great goal taking the ball around the goalkeeper to score and shortly after added a further 2 goals completing his hat trick.

Ollie and Andy Hanson added further goals to show the domination by Fulford in the second half. The odd attack from the Cubs saw Simeon, Ethan and Dougie defending well and protected Jake’s goal resulting in a quieter half for Jake.

George, Louis, Jordan, Andy and Ollie played some great football in the second half and dominated the middle of the park allowing Damian to demonstrate his goal scoring ability.

The game finished 7-1 which was a fair reflection on how poor we were in the first half but how good we were in the second half; a typical Jekyll and Hyde performance the Lions are trying to avoid... We only want to see a 'Jekyll' performance as collectively the Lions are a very ‘able’ team but have to work hard to gain results.

The PotM (chosen by Andy and Pete) was unanimously given to Damian for his hat trick and overall work rate. He was ran hard by George and Ethan who made a difference when they came on after 15 minutes (Ethan) and George on his re-introduction after his rest period for the second quarter of the game.

Classic game of two halves but the best team won today. Well done again to the Lions.
