Match report | Rufforth who were top of the league and had only been beaten once this season were our opponants today. This was going to be a tough match against a big, strong side on a wet heavy pitch. They started well and kept us penned into our half for the first 10 mins, we defended well and although thier wingers got round the back sometimes our centre backs kept good positions and snuffed out the danger. Even though they had the better of this half they never really had a clear cut chance. 0-0 at half time we changed the team around just so we could get more of a foothold on the game. The battle was to be won in the middle of midfield and to stop their wingers playing. The second half started with us begining to win the battle in midfield and more pleasing was that Robert started to get to grips with their winger who was one of thier best players. They were no longer getting in behind us and we started to play. We soon went 1-0 up when a through ball was latched onto by the speedy Matty who cooly ran 20 yards with the ball and slotted it away. Goals breed confidence and we had our best period after this, where we might have gone further ahead, if a couple of our players trusted their left foot a bit more ( you don't get much space and time against the good sides). Pushing forward meant that we were likley to be caught out and we were, for about the only time in the game our centre midfield players were out of position, a rufforth player ran 40yards unchallenged at our defence, slipped the ball wide for the winger to score with a good shot. As with our goal they were now thinking about winning the game and a bout of pressure produced some scrambling defending and keeping. One effort cleared off the line by Joe R with an overhead kick. We saw this out and started to play again finishing the stronger as we passesd the ball well and kept it for good periods down our left hand side. The game looked like going to a draw when Harry picked the ball up in midfield and drove at the rufforth defence. Unlike a couple of times earlier, instead of trying to find Matty he unleashed a shot from 20 yards which couldn't have been placed any better, what a goal, It's the loudest our sideline had cheered all season. 2-1 a great result, hard fought and well deserved. We won this game by playing together as a team and working for one another. They had some good individual players proberly the best we've come up against but they didn't play as a team and we did. |
