| Match report | A big day for the boys our first semi final at 11 a-side, linesmen,a heavy pitch and a big team in woodthorpe. We started brightly passing the ball well and keeping it for long periods although we wern't getting in behind a well organised and strong back four. This meant we were unable to use our main weapon of pace. It was left up to our midfield to produce the space in the middle of the park, we had some early success with Harry hitting the crossbar, then managing to net with another fine shot from the edge of the box. 1-0 at half time and Joe in goal had hardly touched the ball. The second half started and woodthorpe had decided to have a real go and changed thier formation to three at the back and five in midfield. This would have suited us as we could now get in behind them if we got the ball out wide. We didn't do this and found ourselves under a lot of pressure early in the second half, only some good defending by our defence kept them out, but the ball kept coming straight back as we persisted with trying to go through the middle, and not getting th ball out wide. After what seemed like an age we finally got it and Harry played a longer ball wide, where Ben H held off a defender and slotted passed the keeper. Not long after we managed again to get the ball wide and again Ben H raced through, cut inside a defender and placed a well struck shot into the net 3-0. Game over or so we thought but to Woodthorpes credit they never gave up and kept pouring forward, hit the crossbar and making Joe in goal work much harder which he did, pulling off some fine saves with good handling. They managed to breach our defence with only a minute or two to go ,which was a good job as they finished the game on the front foot. This game showed that sometimes we have to change our usual way of playing and addapt. Our short passing game wasn't working and we needed to go longer. A great win takes us through to our first final in our first year at 11 a-side well done. |
