Match report   So for the 1st game. The team was: Sofia (GK), Sophie (Sweeper), Abby (R Wing Back), Charlie (L Wing Back) Laura (Centre Midfield), Amy (Striker), Emily (Striker and Captain): Subs Beth and Dani

So this was the 1st eagerly anticipated Foxes friendly against the once feared Stamford Bridge, but not anymore not after this performance. Before the whistle went I could already hear mutterings from the Foxes support about parents meetings discussing the coach’s position (that’s the harsh reality of girls U13’s football these days!), although after this magnificent performance from the girls I think my position is still safe, at least until the next friendly against the Poppleton Tigers. So on to the game, which feels like a bit of a blur already. The girls settled in very quickly into their formation with the defensive shield of Abby, Charlie and Sophie doing a brilliant job blunting the once menacing bridge strikers. In centre midfield, Laura was everywhere, breaking up the Stamford bridge attacks and setting up wave after wave of Foxes soirées into the fortress Bridge half. Emily and Amy were beginning to build an understanding up front with some very good interplay and I think in games to come, they’re going to terrorise even the best defences in this league. They will score goals galore between them, and if they don’t you parents can have your meeting about my head! So back to the game, after what I recall the Foxes dominating possession, Stamford Bridge made a rare venture into the Foxes penalty box and after a bit of a scramble, a Stamford Bridge striker stabbed a foot at the ball, which went through at least 8 Foxes legs and nestled in the corner of the net far from Sofia’s reach. 1-0 to the Bridge, and the Foxes parents sharpening their knives.

Late in the 2nd half Dani came on for Abby who had run her socks off and had a great game, and slotted straight into the formation. Minutes later Emily found herself in space in the Bridge box, ball at her feet and in space after some neat interplay between Amy and Laura. The parents were already celebrating the inevitable goal, but what, no, the ball crashed against the crossbar, keeper beaten hands down. How cruel this game can be. Minutes later the half time whistle came, Foxes unfortunate to be 1-0 down.

Second half, Beth came on for Charlie who never gave their attackers an inch and slotted in at left wing back. Again the Foxes controlled the game, and Emily and Amy were looking ever more threatening, and linking up really well, peppering the Stamford Bridge gaol with shots. They couldn’t hold on forever, and Emily with a maisy run past 3 defenders, with Amy and Laura acting as decoys cut through the Bridge defence like a knife through butter and slammed an unstoppable shot past the keeper. Well done Emily, great goal!

The Bridge also had a few promising moments and Sofia had to be on her toes to pull off a couple of fine saves. Late on, Abby came back on for and showed also she has the ability to drive the Foxes forward as well as get back and defend. Well done Abby! That was it, end of the game. A well earned 1-1 draw against a very good Stamford Bridge team. It was also very pleasing to see all the players remembering their moves from training, in jockeying players out of play and remembering their positioning to try and intercept the ball.

Girl of the game: Laura: She was the Foxes driving engine in the centre midfield, helped break up the Bridge attacks and turned defence into attack. Well done Laura!
