Match report   It was a miserable day in Thornton Dale, cold, very wet and muddy. Some girls had taken it upon themselves to adorn themselves with mud packs, in the vain hope that this would scare the opposition into submission. Most noticeable was Charlie, with a total mud face pack and dubbed Will I Am before the game by the girls. Don’t ask, I haven’t a clue!

So on with the game. The 1st 10 minutes was all Foxes pressure. With Beth W making some tremendous runs down the left hand side, causing the Dale defence to creak at it’s knees. On five minutes, the Foxes came very close with Sophie M meeting an Emily corner for the goalie to pull off a fine save. A few minutes later, after some fine interplay between Amy and Emily, Amy played Amy in down the right for Amy to coolly finish to put the Foxes a goal to the good. The Foxes had now settled into a rhythm and were creating numerous opportunities amongst them between Amy, Emily and Beth W. However the Dale goalie, probably on the evidence of this performance 2nd only to our very own Sofia in the league goalkeeping stakes, was pulling save after save. On 10 minute however the pressure had to tell and Emily picked up a loose ball in midfield and danced through 3 or 4 defenders to put the Foxes 2 to the good.

After this goal the Foxes strangely pulled their foot off the gas and allowed the Dale back into the game when seemingly we had a stranglehold. We were happy to allow the Dale possession and exert some pressure and although we defended very well, with Josie in particular sticking to her task of keeping the Dale striker under wraps, the Dale created 1 opportunity which took a wicked deflection past Sofia to make it 2-1 at the half time interval. Let that be a lesson girls, never take your foot off the gas, keep it flat to the floor for the full 20 minutes!

On with the 2nd half. This time it was the Dale to exert some pressure on the Foxes at the beginning, with Sofia pulling off a couple of fine saves. The Foxes were beginning to look at little nervous but gradually their confidence grew and in midfield they were finding their feet , with Maisie putting together some nice intricate little passes and Beth W still rampaging down the left and Emily and Amy beginning to pick the Dale defence apart. Numerous opportunities followed for the Foxes, but once again the Dale keeper was in inspired form and we just couldn’t find that breakthrough to make the game safe.

The last 5 minutes turned out to be very good entertainment and was keeping the crowd warm in the freezing driving rain. It was end to end stuff, with the Dale having a couple of great opportunities in the final couple of minutes. Firstly Sofia was very brave to deny the Dale striker by diving at her feet on a 1 v 1. Then in the final minute a low shot was driven towards the right hand corner and perhaps in Sofia’s best save of the game she got down smartly to pull of a Gordon Banks like save! Game over, the Foxes clung on to their 2-1 victory.

Girl of the game: Beth Weeks. As she was last time we played the Dale, Beth was once again the Thorn in Thornton Dale! Well done Beth
