Match report | Fulford and Poppleton played out a truly epic encounter that was a first-class advert for Under 10s football in York. All 16 players involved on the day gave absolutely everything and produced 8 or 9 out of 10 performances and displayed some great skill and fine passing football. Fulford had some good early half-chances as Will T threatened up-front with some good surging runs, but the Poppleton defence ensured that he couldn't quite get any clear shots in on goal. Poppleton played some good possession football and they had some chances, but some great work and key interceptions by the Tom B/Harry defensive partnership kept the Poppleton attacks at bay at a key time in the match. Mid-way through the first half the Fulford midfield, inspired by Harrison, started to impose themselves on the game, and ensured that Poppleton had little time and space on the ball. Once the ball was won there was some great link up play with Will and James up front, but the Poppleton Keeper was equal to any shots that were on target. Poppleton started the second half stronger and forced a succession of corners. Their best chance came when a good through ball was played down their inside right channel to an on-running midfielder, but Tom H came off his line well to make a fine blocking save. Fulford then began their best period of the game and looked really good going forward. Joe C nearly scored following a run and long range shot but the keeper made a fine diving save to turn the ball out for a corner. The next opportunity following good build up play fell to Harrison, and his first time shot was unlucky to just brush the outside of the post and hit the side netting. With about three minutes, the Poppleton keeper pulled off another great save, following a Joe C right-wing corner which was met with a powerfull header by Joe I. At this stage Poppleton still looked very dangerous and the game could have gone either way. However it was settled by a moment of brilliance in the last minute. Joe C floated in a right wing corner and Harrison spun around to the back post. He met the ball from 5 yards out and headed the ball with great technique and power past the Poppleton keeper into the roof of the net, to get a much deserved goal that capped a fine individual display. |
