Match report   In a welcome distraction from the league fixtures, the super Foxes took on Thornton Dale on a glorious day in the 1st run of the cup. The journey to the final has begun!

On with the game and it was very apparent from the off that the Dale girls had banished any memories of their 5-0 drubbing to the Foxes a few weeks ago and were straight away on the front foot. Abby, Sophie G and Beth R all had to be at their very best at the back to weather the early storm to deny the Dale girls any shooting opportunities. Slowly but surely the Foxes realised that they had a real game on their hands here and if they didn’t get their act together soon, their cup dream would come to an abrupt end at the hands of the TD girls, who had somehow bolstered their ranks with a couple of new faces and that had certainly spurred them on! The Foxes though after their slow start began to exert their own pressure on the Dale goal. Firstly with Sophie M winning possession down our left and driving into the penalty area to drive a cross-shot across the face of goal for Emily to narrowly miss making that vital connection by inches. After that 1st Amy played Emily through, however she dragged her shot narrowly wide and then Emily returned the compliment to put Amy through, however the ball bounced up awkwardly on a hard surface and Amy unfortunately scuffed the ball wide after making a great surging run.
Then on 15 minutes, Abby picked up the ball on the Foxes right and drove forward unchallenged. She looked up and had no options and thought, why not I’ll have a pop at goal and struck a fierce drive straight at the goalie, who unfortunately for her let it straight through her hands and then legs into the back of the net for the Foxes to go a gaol up. As the half went on our defence had to remain strong as again they were put under more pressure. The 2 Beths after a few misunderstandings at the beginning of the game were now developing a very good understanding and were thwarting everything that the Dale girls could through at them down that side of the pitch. Beth W also showed some good skill in one move to ghost past a Dale defender as if she wasn’t there and then play Emily in to shoot narrowly wide. At the end of the half there was a bit of a scramble in the Foxes box, however we stood firm and went in at half time a goal to the good.
On with the 2nd half and this was a very even affair, with again the back 3 having to make lots of very well timed tackles to keep the Dale at bay and Sofia also had to come to our rescue on more than a few occasions to pull off as is accustomed for Sofia some regulation fine saves. 10 minutes into the half and Abby made a great surging run down the right drawing a foul on the edge of the Dale box. Emily lined it up and rather strangely the Dale defenders neglected to put a wall in front of Em. Surely this was an invitation for her to blast it into the back of the net! The ref signalled to Emily that it was direct, however she interpreted this as telling her to pass the ball directly back to the goalie. So she did and with Sophie M running in thinking it was a cunning little pass for her to run onto and score and a Dale defender putting Soph under pressure at the same time, they both completely missed the ball directly in front of the goalie, who was clearly unsighted, missing it too for it to dribble slow motion into the back of the net to cries of “No, No, No” from the Dale bench! A very bizarre goal chalked up for Emily!
After that, Dani made some good probing runs down the right and played Emily in the once for her to be tackled at the final moment by a Dale defender and Sophie M played Amy through to shoot just over the crossbar. Game over and the Foxes had rather fortunately made it through to the next round of the cup, with 2 rather freakish goals. I put it down to karma. We were owed those goals from a few weeks back when the ref appeared to miss 2 good Foxes goals!
Girl of the Game: Beth R – Never put a foot wrong, putting in some great tackles and towering headers to thwart the Dale girls in front of our goal and help us keep a 7th successive clean sheet. What a record!
