Match report   Fulford won the Hamilton Panthers’ Tournament with a thrilling 3-2 penalty shoot out win versus Easingwold.

Fulford began the tournament versus the hosts and began in confident style and were quickly 1-0 up when a Joe C free kick rebounded back to Tom G, who scored with a powerful shot from just outside the box. Panthers quickly hit back to level when a good passing move found their striker free at the back post, and he scored with a neat finish. Panthers had the best chance to win the game late on when the ball broke to a Panthers player on the back post, but his shot was smothered at close range by an excellent save from Tom H.

Next up was York Cubs, but there were no goals in a very evenly matched game. Ross was unlucky not to score. First he hit a right-footed cross shot that went just past the far post and was nearly turned in by Will. Moments later he curled a left-footed shot that seemed destined to nestle in the corner, but the ball was blown wide by the very strong wind.

The next match was against Rawcliffe B and this saw Fulford record their first victory of the tournament. Rawcliffe had the best chance in the first half, but were denied by a fantastic save by Harvey, which for those who had done their Bobby Charlton “Homework” on Thursday evening, would have looked reminiscent of Alex Stepney’s save in the 1968 European Cup Final from Eusebio! Fulford scored the only goal of the game when Will broke down the inside left channel and his left foot strike took a slight deflection to take it past the Rawcliffe keeper.

The next game was versus Panthers, but this again was a tight affair and ended in a 0-0 draw.

Fulford’s next game was against York Cubs. Fulford were unlucky not to take the lead in the first half when a 20 yard volley from Joe I, clipped the far post. Fulford took the lead in the second half when Joe C picked up the ball on the edge of the box, took the ball around his opponent, before scoring with a powerful right foot shot. York Cubs were unlucky not to have made the semi-finals as they had played some of the best football of the tournament.

Next up was Rawcliffe B, which ended 0-0 and was a result which took both teams into the semi-finals with Fulford topping the group.

In the semi-final Fulford faced Rawcliffe A, which was a repeat of last years final. The outcome was the same with a 1-0 win for Fulford as a result of a Joe C corner that was deflected into his own net by a Rawcliffe defender.

The final was against Easingwold. Fulford nearly went 1-0 up early on when a counter attack saw James dribble past the last defender, but his shot was well saved by the Easingwold keeper. In the second half another good chance fell to Fulford when a great run and cross by Joe C fell to Will six yards out. Unfortunately the ball bobbled up on the hard surface just as he shot and the ball went narrowly over the bar. The next good chance came from a Joe C corner, which Joe I met with a powerful downward header. However the hard ground this time resulted in the ball bouncing up to hit the underside of the bar and rebound out. Easingwold always looked dangerous when attacking but their best moves were broken up by Tom B, who had a fantastic tournament. Will then had another good chance late on, but his shot went over the bar. Extra time could still not separate the sides and when the final whistle went, the Fulford players looked gutted to have not settled the game in open play and realised they’d have to take their chances with Penalties.

Easingwold took the first penalty, but this was kept out by a great diving save away to his right by Tom H. Fulford’s first penalty was scored by Joe C. Easingwold’s second penalty was again saved by Tom H, who this time dived to his left to make the save. Fulford’s next penalty was from Tom B, who was unlucky to see his shot hit the inside of the post and then hit the keeper, who then just managed to stop it before it crossed the line. The next two penalties were scored by both teams, with Joe I and Will scoring for Fulford. The next penalty from Easingwold went wide which meant that Fulford were the 3-2 winners!!

All 10 Fulford players were great over the course of the tournament and they all deserve much credit, particularly for the character they showed to win the final on penalties.
