Match report | Summer is over, which can only mean 1 thing, the advent of the 2011-12 football season for the fabulous Foxes. In preparation for the big KO on the 17th, the Foxes were up against their old adversaries, Stamford Bridge in what turned out to be a great game of football. On with the game and the Foxes were very slow out of their dens with calamitous defending at the 1st 3 corners allowing 2 to fly straight in and the other with some poor closing down allowing the SB attacker to slot home without any kind of challenge from the Foxes defence. Good job this was a friendly girls, I think I know what we’ll be working on in training this week. Gradually though, the Foxes were beginning to poke their heads out of their dens in the realisation that they had a game on their hands and started to pull the strings. Emily from the centre of the park was spraying some great balls around looking for the space for Amy to run onto behind the SB back line. However every time it seemed that she had played the perfect through pass, the SB goalie was always very smartly of her line to snuff out the danger. However, SB had rode their luck too many times and in another great passing movement, Emily fed Amy who had made a great run to latch on to the pass and guide the ball into the back of the net to bring the Foxes back into the game. That was the end of the 1st 3rd of the game! On with the 2nd 3rd and again the Foxes were punished early on to concede after SB had made some neat passing movements to leave their striker in acres of space to blast into the back of the net to put them 4-1 to the good. To our credit we didn’t let our heads drop and in a good passing move involving Amy and Beth W who found Emily in space in the box to wriggle past a few defenders and slot home to bring us back into the game. Moments later an Emily corner was headed into the back of the SB net by their own defender and we were right back in it. On with the final third of the game and I think all the players were tiring by then. The Foxes were fastest out of their blocks this time, with Beth W making an excellent break down the right hand side to fire at goal for the SB keeper to pull off a great save. Georgie was also making some great runs down the left and was extremely tenacious as well in proving that defensive cover in front of Beth R. In the final minutes Amy broke through the defensive line and rounded the keeper and was just unable to slot home and Abby stepped up from defence to fire into the corner only to be foiled by the SB keeper pulling off another fine save. Game over and the Foxes had gone down 4-3 and a timely reminder that this a good strong league and we’re going to have to work extremely hard if we want to be challenging for honours by the end of the season. Areas to work on: Corners obviously! Heading , closing down much quicker – we can’t afford to wait for a teammate to close down and finally look to spread the ball wide more from the centre of the park. Georgie and BethW had made lost of great runds into space, however we just didn't pick them out often enough. Girl of the game: Abby – Worked her socks off even though she wasn’t 100%, defended really well against a very tricky SB winger who never got the better of her and even found the energy to step up from defence to support us in attack. Well done Abz! |
