Match report   Poppleton started the match brightly and were ahead after 5 minutes when Fulford failed to clear a corner and the goal was scored from close range. Fulford gradually began to get into their stride and were level after 10 minutes. The ball was partially cleared, but fell to Joe I 25 yards out, as the Poppleton defence pushed out, he slipped the ball through to Frankie in the inside left position, who had cleverly managed to stay onside. The goalkeeper was quickly off his line, but Frankie clipped the ball past him with the outside of his right foot and into the far corner of the net for an excellent Centre Forward’s goal.

Fulford nearly took the lead when Will T cut in from the right and his shot went narrowly wide at the far post. Fulford were now putting some good attacking moves together, turning defence into attack with some great quick passing moves. Isaac played a fantastic 30 yard defence splitting pass through to Will T who ran clear. Poppleton’s keeper was quickly off his line, and pulled off a cracking save as Will tried to go around him.

Poppleton always looked very dangerous, but their best attacks were repelled by Tom Blades who had an excellent game at Centre Half. Fulford’s best move of the first half came on the stroke of half time. Tom H threw the ball out to Will M, who played it in to Joe C, who then passed to Isaac who ran through down the right. He crossed it in, but no one could get on the end of it as it flashed across the 6 yard box.

Early in the second half Poppleton won a corner on the right. The cross skidded up off the surface and hit Joe I on the wrist. There was clearly no intent, but as is often seen at places like Old Trafford and Anfield, the ref awarded a penalty to the home side! The penalty was well struck into the bottom left corner but Tom H was unlucky not to get a hand to it.

Fulford and Joe I, however hit back 5 minutes later in the best way possible. The ball was played inside from the left wing to Joe I, who from 25 yards and an angle more akin to a Kevin Sinfield Conversion, hit a shot that looped in over the keeper’s head. Fulford could have taken the lead when first Isaac burst through down the right and then they had their own claim for a penalty, but was waived away by the referee.

Poppleton then began to enjoy their best period of the game as they really started to push Fulford back. They scored the goal of the game when the ball was partially cleared to one of Poppleton’s Central Midfielders who hit a first time shot from 25 yards that screamed into the bottom left hand corner and was reminiscent of many of the goals that Steven Gerard has scored down the years.

Poppleton got a 4th soon after when they had a free header from a corner that was then tapped in from close range. Poppleton got a 5th to end what had been 15 minutes of brilliance, to seal what was ultimately a deserved win. Much of this good football was inspired by their left midfielder, who got a goal his performance warranted when he dribbled down the left and cut in to then unleash a powerful shot into the roof of the net.

Poppleton had chances to add to their lead, but the final action of note came when Isaac hit a 30 yard free kick that hit the top of the crossbar.

Fulford went away disappointed with the final result, but pleased with the manner in which they’d contributed to a highly entertaining game of football.
