Match report   Fulford's first match of 2012 saw the visit of top of the table Poppleton Tigers. Poppleton started the game well and were confidently passing the ball around in the opening 5 minutes. Fulford then started to impose themselves on the game and created the first chance after 10 minutes in what was probably the best move of the game. Harry passed the ball from defence up to Will in the centre circle. He layed it off, with back to goal, with a great first touch to Isaac. Isaac then put a great first time defence splitting pass through to Will who had turned and ran to break clear of the defence. The keeper came out to narrow the angle and pulled off a great save to deny Will.

Fulford were then starting to have the slight advantage in terms of possession and territory, but Poppleton looked dangerous whenever they looked to break from defence into attack, but a common feature of the first half was some excellent tracking back from Joe C to intercept, before the ball got to Poppleton's tricky right winger, and then Joe C restarted the attack with some surging runs forward.

Fulford opened the scoring after fifteen minutes. Poppleton cleared the ball to Joe I who picked it up 35 yards out, he controlled it and went past the first challenge and then picked out Joe C, with a great pass, who had ghosted in through the inside left channel. Joe C took one touch to control the ball and scored with a good finish into the bottom corner.

Poppleton's best chance of the first half came when their centre forward turned and shot from 25 yards, but Tom H had advanced off his line to make a comfortable save.

Fulford continued to push forward in the first half. The best battle amongst a number of very good individual contests across the pitch was between Will and the Poppleton Centre Half, who had an excellent game with some very timely tackles and interceptions.

Ten minutes into the second half came the key moment of the match. Poppleton chipped the ball into Fulford's box. Tom H was quickly off his line and was always favourite to get to the ball ahead of Poppleton's right winger. Tom clearly got his foot to the ball first to clear it for a throw in and Poppleton's right winger fell over in the resulting collision. There was no appeal from any of the Poppleton players, the Poppleton Manager or Poppleton spectators, but the referee somehow awarded a penalty, which was duly converted.

Fulford had a chance to retake the lead when Will played the ball through to Isaac, but the Poppleton keeper was again quickly off his line to make a good save.

Fulford's next attack came when Joe C took on a couple of players before cutting inside and hit a powerful shot towards the far corner, but was denied by a full length diving save from the Poppleton keeper.

With 15 minutes to go, the balance of the game shifted in favour of Poppleton as they finished the game the stronger of the two teams. Poppleton did have a genuine appeal for a penalty, but this was waved away by the referee.

Poppleton continued to press, but were denied by some great defensive play from Tom G, Tom B and Harry, the latter of whom had a particularly good game as Captain in organising a lot of the players around him.

Poppleton scored the winner with 8 minutes to go. The Poppleton Centre Forward took a long throw that was cleared towards the corner flag for him to then put in a good deep right wing cross. The ball was only partially cleared to a Poopleton midfielder whose shot found the top left hand corner.

Ross had a chance to equalise for Fulford late on. The ball dropped to him ten yards out for a waist high volley. If he'd have caught it cleanly it would have probably gone in, but he sliced the shot and the keeper was able to make a save.

Full credit must go to Poppleton for coming back to win with a late goal, which is always the hallmark of a Championship winning team, but all the Fulford players can be rightly proud of themselves for such a good team performance.

Man of the Match was Joe C for a great performance down the left, which was particularly appreciated as he'd chosen to play rather than take up the option of a Manchester City ticket to see them play Man Utd in the FA Cup.
