| Match report | Sometimes the final score in a game does not reflect the balance of play or the relative merits of the teams. Over 75 minutes Fulford went toe to toe with the strongest team in the league and looked like they would achieve a well-earned point. Indeed, for periods of the second half, Alex, Robbo and Josh M looked like they could grab the winner as they fought for everything. Arguably Wiggington could have been down to 10 men for much of the second half following a foul on Robbo who only had the keeper to beat. Wiggington are excellent passers who will make chances against most teams. But Fulford defended bravely throughout the game. As ever, Dan was faultless between the sticks and pulled off several outstanding saves including a wonderful tip over in the second half. The defence of Scully, Liam, Josh Q and Pavs - with the addition to Gianni in the second half - was disciplined and stood firm for the vast majority of the game. They got their heads to the ball when it counted and never flinched from the hard challenge. Wiggington's first goal came from a corner which was nodded inside the far post by the centre half. Signore Gabbiadini may be reviewing his zonal marking at corners although, to be fair, the boys defended the majority of corners well. The second half was outstanding for its end to end action. The midfield worked and worked for the entirety, with Joe, Binno, Beddo, Tom R and Theo trying to absorb the pressure of the Wiggington attacks whilst also seeking to create the opportunities for the strikers. The whole team should be proud of its performance. A point would have been just desserts for an excellent performance which would have been consistent with their encouraging start to the season. But a difficult lesson was learned: the need to concentrate for 80 minutes because good teams have a habit of scoring late. |
