Match report   Fulford’s third league game of the season provided them with the now-traditional early season visit to Poppleton’s Millfield Lane ground.

Fulford made the worst possible start to the game as in the opening minute and with their first attack, Poppleton broke down the right wing. As the cross came in it fell for Poppleton’s inside left who half volleyed the ball into the roof of the net.

Worse was to come for Fulford, as minutes later they were two down. A good through ball from midfield found Poppleton’s right winger who had made a great darting run off his wing and scored with a cool finish.

After the slow start, Fulford began to find their feet and started moving the ball well, through midfield. Their first good chance came when Will held off the challenges of the centre half and got a shot in from just inside the box, but the Poppleton keeper caught the ball well above his head.

Harry was having a fine game in goal and just about reached a long range shot that threatened to creep in under the crossbar. He also did well to stand up and not commit himself as a Poppleton forward ran through on goal, and the resultant shot hit the side netting.

Fulford had had a really good 15 minutes of play and got their reward 5 minutes before half time when Will picked up the ball on the left hand corner of the area and played it square to Frankie. Will carried on his run into the box and Frankie played it straight into his path. Will took a touch and curled the ball into the bottom right hand corner.

Unfortunately, Fulford allowed Poppleton to re-gain their two goal lead almost immediately. A corner was cleared, but the ball was played in from the left flank. The Poppleton striker showed great skill in pulling the ball out of the air with his right foot and perfectly into his path in one touch and despatched the ball into the bottom left hand corner.

3-1 to Poppleton at half-time, but Fulford would ultimately rue their slow start that had meant they hadn’t made the most of the strengthening wind that had been in their favour in the first half.

In the second half, Fulford went down to 10 men temporarily when Will limped off and Poppleton took advantage by sweeping forward. The ball was played through to their right winger and his finish found the bottom left hand corner.

Fulford were unlucky not to pull back a goal, when a great run through midfield from Joe C, saw him play a great through ball to Isaac, but his shot hit the side netting.

It was pretty much one way traffic from then on, with Fulford being penned back in their own half for much of the rest of the game with Poppleton adding 4 further goals.

There was some good tackling in midfield by Harrison and Joe C who work tirelessly all game and despite the scoreline; Tom B and Tom G both had good games in defence. The man-of the-match award went to Peter who, within the context of the whole game, did very well on the left side of defence against Poppleton’s right winger who is one of the quickest and trickiest players in the league.
