Match report   A sickness bug that had afflicted many of the Fulford team in the week ahead of the game, resulted in 3 players being unavailable on the morning of the game, and two of the 11 players were not feeling 100%. Unfortunately, just ahead of kick off, Tom G was not feeling well enough to play, so that meant that Fulford were down to 10 players.

The game kicked off and Poppleton started brightly and looked very sharp as they moved the ball well through the midfield, as Fulford were still getting to grips with the numerous positional changes. Poppleton went one up after 5 minutes, when a right-wing corner fell loose in the penalty area, and was dispatched into the roof of the net by a Poppleton defender.

Fulford gradually started to get into the game and the whole team, particularly when in defensive positions, were very brave in possession, as they kept the ball very well and began to string a succession of quick passes together.

After 15 minutes one such move led to the equaliser. Joe I and Dan combined down the left to play the ball through to Will on the half way line. He found James, who managed to spread the ball wide to Isaac on the right wing. The conventional thing to do would have been to take a touch and then look up, but Isaac whipped in a superb first time cross. Will and Frankie were both unmarked at the back post, but it was Frankie who was first to it, to head into the roof of the net from a yard out.

Poppleton went two-one up when one of their midfielders broke through down the inside right channel and hit a low shot into the bottom corner.

Fulford continued to play their part in a very entertaining half of football. It looked like they had equalised when Frankie and Will combined, and Will scored with a shot into the far left corner, but the ref believed he’d seen a foul by Will, when in fact the Poppleton defender had kicked the back of Will’s foot and then fell over.

Isaac and Frankie then combined to square the ball around the advancing keeper to Will, whose shot rolled agonisingly past the left hand post.

The opening stages of the second half were evenly matched, but around the 40 minute mark it was becoming evident that Fulford were now starting to tire. Poppleton scored their 3rd goal from a powerful long range strike that found the bottom right hand corner. Poppleton went on to score three more goals, but Fulford continued to look to pass the ball and get forward, when they could. This was best typified by Dan, who had a fantastic game as an emergency left-back. He always used the ball well in possession and was keen to get forward to support the attack, whenever the opportunity arose.

The Fulford players can be very proud of themselves for contributing to a very entertaining game of football, in which under very challenging circumstances, they gave their all for the full 60 minutes and never at any point let their heads drop.

All at Fulford wish Poppleton all the best in the remaining rounds of the York FA Cup.
