Match report | Fulford travelled to Easingwold on a March morning that saw some of the most challenging weather conditions of the winter so far. On arrival at Easingwold, the snow was coming in horizontally, but it stopped in time for kick off. However, just before kick-off, the bitingly cold North-Easterly wind really picked up and was blowing straight down the pitch. Easingwold had the slope and the wind in their favour in the first half and used this to their advantage as they created the first good chance of the game, when a right wing cross fell to their striker who hit a powerful shot at the near post from about 7 yards out, but Stephen made an excellent two-handed save above his head. The first half was an even contest, with clear cut chances and shots on goal at a premium. Fulford did play some good passing football, but whenever they got in and around the box, the Easingwold defenders were well placed to make some timely tackles and interceptions. The Fulford defence were having an equally good game, especially the man-of-the-match, Harry, who made numerous top class tackles, interceptions and passes out of defence that ensured that despite facing the slope and strong wind, Fulford weren’t pushed back too close to their own goal. In the second half, Fulford were camped in the Easingwold half, but Easingwold’s resolute defence ensured that chances were still few and far between. The breakthrough finally did come with 12 minutes to go, when a good move down the right led to Dan cutting in along the touchline. He pulled the ball back to Frankie, but as he went to shoot the ball bobbled up, and while he didn’t strike the ball cleanly, it lobbed up and went over the Easingwold keeper and into the net. Fulford added a second with 5 minutes remaining when Tom G played an excellent through ball to Dan. He cut inside along the edge of the box and laid the ball back to Joe I who hit a powerful wind-assisted cross-shot. The keeper did well to get a hand on it, but could only divert the ball into the top right hand corner of the net. Both teams richly deserved their post-match hot dogs for coping with the conditions to the degree they did. Many thanks to Rich Wells and all at Easingwold for once again providing such great post-match hospitality. |
