Match report   In a repeat of last year’s Cup Final, Fulford met Poppleton in the semi-final of the League Cup. After heavy overnight rain, the surface was very heavy in patches, but the referee passed the pitch fit and the game was on.

Fulford started brightly and the first good chance came their way after 10 minutes when a good move in the centre of midfield led to the ball being played wide to Isaac. His run and cross picked out Will, but his shot went agonisingly wide of the left hand post. The next good chance came five minutes later when Fulford were awarded a free-kick on the left hand edge of the penalty area. Isaac curled in the free-kick which bounced off the top of the crossbar and went over.

However it was Poppleton who opened the scoring minutes later when their right winger broke free and scored with a hard low shot into the far corner. Poppleton soon doubled their advantage soon after when a through ball down the inside left channel was well finished by one of their forwards.

In the second-half, Poppleton were soon on the attack and went 3-0 when a right wing cross went over everyone’s heads and into the far corner of the net.

Fulford were not finished and continued to pass the ball well. They finally got their reward when Isaac made a great run down the right wing and fired in a vicious cross. Will T looked to half-volley it towards goal, but didn’t quite catch hold of it and as the ball dropped loose, Dan was on hand score. Minutes later Fulford pulled another goal back. Joe C and Dan spotted an opportunity to take a quick short corner on the left and Joe C advanced to the edge of the box and curled the ball high into the roof of the net.

Poppleton soon responded when a cross from the left was turned in at the back post to make it 4-2.

Fulford still had the momentum though and pulled it back to 4-3 when a sweeping move down the left, led to Will playing the ball inside for Dan, who then squared the ball for Joe C, who smashed the ball into the bottom left corner of the net. Fulford were really going for it now, as they went in search of an equaliser, and this came minutes later. Ross put in a great crunching tackle high up the pitch to win the ball back for Fulford. He then played it out wide to Isaac, who went past the defender and whipped in another great cross. Will was first to it, but his shot was cleared off the line by a defender, but it fell to Dan who made no mistake to score from close range.

Amazingly there was still 15 minutes left at this stage, and despite all the goals going in, there was also some good defensive play and tackling on display from players on both sides. The next 10 minutes were tense, as both sides must have known that the next goal could well be crucial in the tie. Unfortunately that goal came the way of Poppleton, when their Centre-Forward ran on to a through ball to score. Poppleton went on to add two further goals in stoppage time to seal their win.

All in all it was a cracking Cup tie, with much credit to all players and officials in putting on such a free-flowing entertaining game in tricky conditions.
