| Match report | A step into the unknown for Fulford as they visited South Cave in round 2 of the Alf Bolden Memorial County Cup. After a 7-1 victory in round one, confidence was high but after only a few minutes realised the size of the task ahead. South Cave put a lot of early pressure on the back four of Matty, James, Luke & Will but they coped well and with excellent support and determined tackling from Harry & Jack D the home side were kept at bay. Neither keeper was really tested in the first half but Paddy did have a chance but tamely shot at the home keeper. There was a strong crosswind but to the credit of both teams this never effected the quality of the game. Some good build up play from South Cave just lacked the finish required and a header from a corner from Matty just over the bar as the first half closed goalless. The second half began in similar fashion to the first half with Cave on top but coming up against Fulford defending really strongly. Ryan showed some excellent footwork at times twice nearly broke through only to be thwarted by some very good defending by the home side. An un characteristic error in the Fulford defence lead to the home side's best chance but found Jack B in great form tipping over from close range. Cave hit the bar and shortly after Jack received a pass from from Harry, turned, beat the defence and with a sweet right foot strike was unlucky to see the ball rebound off the inside of the post and away to safety. The final whistle blew, goalless and heading for another 30 mins of extra time. With the home side showing signs of tiredness, Fulford began to see more possession and a few chances created. As the game looked destined for a penalty shoot out Rob found himself in on goal in the last minute only for the defender to pull him back, denying him a goal scoring opportunity could have seen red but the award of a penalty was punishment enough. Up stepped Rob to send Fulford into round 3 but the home keeper superbly tipped his spot kick on to the post and the game finished 0-0. Ryan, Paddy & Will gave Fulford a 3-1 lead but Rob was again denied by the home keeper & Jack B missed and Fulford were eliminated 4-3 on penalties. Great game in difficult conditions. |
