Match report   The preliminary cup game against Heworth was a potential banana skin akin to the game v Easingwold Hawks last season and we knew we had to start well.

We played a makeshift defence with Simeon sitting out the game and Ethan and George starting on the bench. Jake commanded the back three of Doug, Ellis and Andy well, Alfie pulled the strings in the midfield with Jordan to his right and Ollie his left. Louis started in the hole behind Damian. Ollie captained today (instead of the club captain Simeon) as he was playing against his old team and carried out the job effectively.

The first 15 minutes were nervy and Heworth were unlucky not to go 1-0 up. They were first to most balls although were less effective in the final third of the pitch but hesitancy crept in at the back for the Lions. Tactic changes were made; Andy pushed to right midfield and immediately used his ‘lightning’ pace to move down the wing and put in a fantastic cross for Damian to head home. Ollie, soon after, made a strong run from midfield and finished in the corner with aplomb. Being 2-0 up gave the Lions some breathing space.

Half time came and being 2-0 up gave Fulford a cushion to make changes. Alfie commandeered the centre of the pitch playing very wisely, carrying out the simple things to great effect with George. Damian soon added goals number 3 and 4 completing a fine hat trick. Two great finishes when racing clear of the Heworth defence.

The 5th Fulford goal was some great build up work from Ethan, Ollie who fed George who in turn played a delightful ball to Louis who placed a shot low to the goalkeepers left in the bottom corner to score his first goal for Fulford. Heworth pulled a consolation goal back however the striker was 5 yards offside (admitted by all spectators) but apart from this the referee had a great game officiating.

The final score was 5-1 with Fulford gaining a sound victory and now play Tadcaster Magnets in the next round.

There were some great performances today all over the field; Andy H played well, Damian scored a fine hat trick but Alfie took the award putting into play some simple football to great effect and was unlucky not to add to the score sheet with some good long range shooting to test the Heworth goalkeeper..

Score 5-1 (HT 2-0)
