Match report | Fulford fielded a depleted team due to injury and Easter holidays, but welcomed Edward into the defence for a testing debut against a York RI team keen to avenge their 0-3 cup reverse from two weeks ago. The hosts started brightly, taking an early lead with a well struck opener. Joe kept us in it with a great double save before we finally started to put some passes together in a dangerous triangle between Jonathan, Luke and Clemmie who spearheaded the attack with some great touches. Our equaliser came from unlikely source as Luke headed home from a poorly cleared corner. We grew in confidence and Luke and Clemmie began to cause havoc. York RI were playing on the break and Eddie had his work cut out covering some incisive runs. With 3 Fulford defenders pulled into the corner the RI winger managed to get a cross in that was despatched smartly by the RI forward. Half Time 2-1 down. The second half brought a transformation. Keeping to their positions, showing confidence in each other’s ability, allowed Eddie to express himself. He really found his feet breaking up attack after attack, and taking the ball out of defence with great composure. From one such break Jonathan released Clemmie through the middle. After some quick interplay with Luke he took a great touch and early shot which gave the RI keeper no time to set himself. Shortly after we took a well-deserved lead with what must be goal of the season with a sweeping team move from back to front. Joe to Eddie, who took out one attacker and sent it down the right to Sam whose acrobatic volley switched the ball inside to Jonathan. Clemmie’s run drew the RI defenders wide as Jonathan’s Gerrard-like diagonal ball found the eager Luke outside the left hand corner of the box. With a drop of the shoulder Luke cut in on his right and unleashed an unstoppable curling effort into the far corner. With Edward continuing to snuff out further RI efforts, the wind seemed to go out of the RI sails. Clemmie made it 4 to put daylight between the teams and a cherry on the cake of one of the best performances of the season. MOTM Eddie – for a classy and solid debut and whose interceptions started two moves that ended in goals. |
