Match report | The Vikings 2nd match was literally a game of two halves. We had gone back to seven aside and were on the bigger pitch. The Vikings opted to swap positions about a bit and it appeared to work - the Vikings were strong in possession and moved the ball around quite well. Freddie, Oliver, Reuben and Cameron linked up quite well and were finding lots of holes in the Dunnington defence. After a few clear cut chances and unbelievable misses it looked like it was going to be one of those games. With the half drawing to a close, Cameron managed to score, to make it 1-0, through a sea of Dunnington defence who to give credit did defend in numbers leaving little chance to score. Grace and Tilly held up the defence superbly giving Barnaby little to do. 1-0 at half time. The 2nd half was a different story. The Vikings, full of confidence from their dominant performance in the 1st half, pushed forward in numbers looking for a 2nd goal. This left us despairingly lacking in defence which Dunnington totally capitalized on, breaking from a failed Viking attack and scoring past poor Freddie. 1-1. Still the Vikings pressed forward, throwing caution to the wind, and it paid off. A cracking forward attack from Daniel, the defence thwarted, only to fall to Reuben who unleashed home. 2-1. The Vikings, still full of confidence, threw more bodies forward and Dunnington, defending well again, broke away. No defence again and an equalizing goal 2-2. Again the Vikings pressed in numbers, my voice was getting quite loud at this point - "Defence!!" Dunnington broke away again - this time Freddie managed to stop the certain goal with a brave save at the legs of the Dunnington player, getting injured in the process. Tilly came on for the last few remaining minutes and with both teams looking for a winner. Dunnington were now full of life and confidence and it was clear it just wasn't going to be the Vikings day. Adi was still full of running down the wing, wreaking havoc with the Dunnington defence. He cut in and shot only for the keeper to save it or did he? Some controversy as the Vikings players protested to the ref that the ball crossed the line. Even the parents on the sideline said that it crossed but no goal was awarded. Booo! Sensing their luck was still with them, Dunnington broke away again and scored the winner - 3-2 it finished and a sightly gutted Vikings. A good/tough learning game I think! Player of the Match was Cameron - great holding football, passing and also a goal! |
