Match report   Next up for the Foxes, it was Knaresborough Town. A new addition to the league with very impressive pristine facilities. The morning even started with a guided tour for those who arrived early and we were all duly impressed! So the question on our loyal supporters lips was: would the Foxes carry their form from the Heworth game away from fortress Fulford? Questions on my lips were, would I continue to see the great team movement from last week, would the girls use the block side tackle learnt in training and would the girls also understand zonal marking from corners? This and many more questions were about to be answered!

So off we went and the Foxes completely dominated the 1st 10 minutes of play, carving opening after opening with Amy and Emily both coming very close on 2 or 3 occasions each with Emily agonisingly hitting the post when it looked like goal written all over it! All this pressure was possible because the team had remembered the importance of providing options, with Georgie and Dani both providing great support down the wings and Sophie M providing good cover in the centre of the park. Let’s not forget also the fullbacks Josie and Beth also pushing up and supporting, with Sophie G as composed as ever at centre back.

After the 1st 10 minutes though when I think all we could see was a convincing Foxes victory, we began to slip back into old ways and the options were running out for our girls on the ball. Knares were enjoying a great deal of possession, drawing a string of fine saves from Sofia. Firstly from distance when the ball nearly looped over Sofia’s head but she did superbly to backtrack and tip over the bar. Then they were in down our left for Sofia to pull of another fine stop at her near post. Unfortunately we couldn’t hold out forever and in another break, Knares scored as one of their girls powered through the middle. The onslaught then abated a bit and in one fine move Abby played in Amy with an exquisite ball, we thought goal, but Amy pulled it narrowly wide. Then up the other end the Knares striker wriggled clear, only for Sophie G to appear from nowhere and put in a fine side block tackle and come away with the ball just as she was about to pull the trigger. Well done Sophie G, that saved a certain goal! However moments later Knares broke again, and with Sophie M desperately trying to get back to put in the tackle, the Knares striker shot early and scored a great goal in the bottom right hand corner.

The Foxes were now staring heavily down the unthinkable barrel of defeat! However straight from the restart, Amy and Emily worked their magic together and waltzed through the Knares defence for Emily to slot coolly into the back of the net. The Foxes were back in the game, halftime and 2-1 to Knares.

On with the 2nd half and within a couple of minutes of the restart, the Foxes were back level. Again it was the Emily / Amy combination, with Emily putting Amy in the clear to restore parity. The Foxes were absolutely rampant is this stage and were putting the Knares defence under extreme pressure. Surely it had to give way soon. Up the other end, when called into action Josie and Beth were putting in some fine tackles and Sophie M was providing that vital screen in front of the Foxes defence. Sophie G also put in another fine goal saving tackle where she sprouted wings to get back to once again thwart the Knares forward line. The Foxes also defended a couple of corners very well and I even saw Laura get in a headed clearance. Julie, you’d better get her down to the hairdressers quick sharp to sort her hair out, as I think a few may have fallen out of place!

Then on down the over end, Amy was played in again on goal from a delightful through ball from Sophie M, but just pulled it wide. Dani also had a good run down the right and in a lovely flowing move, Emily nearly got on the end of one of Dani’s fine crosses. Then with minutes to go, we won a corner on the right. Emily swung it over, it was met very well by Abby and cannoned off a Knares player to what we thought was the roof of the net and out. Unfortunately not according to the ref and the match was played out for a 2-2 draw.

A special mention must also go to Maisie, Sandy and Elle for your understanding. You all travelled a long way, but kept supporting the team and I’m sorry I couldn’t find the right moment to get you on and that the friendly didn’t happen. I didn’t hear a word of complaint and I thought your attitude although you must have felt disappointed was fantastic and you showed real team spirit.

Girl of the Game: Emily, worked tirelessly, scored 1 and set up another. Well done Emily!

Lesson of the day: We switched off as a team for 10 minutes and that nearly cost us, but very well done for showing true grit in fighting back for a draw, which on another day we would have sneaked the win
