Match report | Next up for the Foxes it was there old adversary, Stamford Bridge who were now languishing at the bottom of the league. How times have changed for the once unbeatable Bridge, although I think it’s testimony to how strong the league is and how well other teams have progressed. It was a late kick off and for once the Stamford Bridge girls didn’t have to listen to the constant tirade from the touchline, with their manager away on a coaching course. Maybe it worked, because the 1st half just about belonged to the Bridge although the Foxes looked more dangerous on the break. The Foxes came under sustained pressure, however the Bridge never really troubled Sofia, although she had to be very alert to pull off a couple of fine saves from long range shots. The back 4 of Beth, Sandy, Sophie G and Josie, were all doing a fine job, getting in some meaty looking tackles and also playing the ball out well from the back. There were a number of “nearly” balls in behind the Bridge defenders for Amy and Emily to chase onto, however the Bridge defence stood firm and managed to get in the vital interceptions to thwart our potent strikeforce. Our best chance came in a well worked move down our right which saw Georgie stormed clear of the Bridge back line and get in a shot to force the Bridge keeper to make a fine save. Into the 2nd half and the Foxes midfield of Laura, Sophie M and Georgie began to take control, pressing further up the pitch. The chances followed, 1st with Laura making a good run down the left to shoot narrowly wide and then to feed Emily in to bury it from close range in the bottom left corner to put the Foxes a goal up. After that the Foxes broke clear on 3 or 4 occasions, with both Amy and Emily getting in behind the Bridge defence only to be denied by the refs whistle for offside. There were definitely some very close calls there and maybe on another week we would have got the benefit of the doubt and this would have been a more comfortable victory for the Foxes. Up our end, Sandy was performing heroics especially with some of her blocks. She definitely took “one for the team” when her head got in the way of a Bridge howitzer. Maybe lost a few brain cells, but worth the pain to ensure that the Foxeskept their clean sheet. On the 1 occasion that the Bridge broke clear of the Foxes back line, Sofia was smartly off her line to block the Bridge striker’s effort and clear the danger. Game over and a 1-0 victory for the Foxes. Girl of the game: Sophie Grantham. Put in some fine tackles and always looked composed on the ball, turning defence into attack with some fine balls into the feet of our midfielders and strikers |
